Praises U.S. Senate candidate as a “solid conservative”

Alpine, Utah, May 12, 2010 — Appearing on the FOX News program “On The Record” with host Greta Van Susteren Monday night, former Senator Rick Santorum endorsed Mike Lee for the U.S. Senate. Santorum’s endorsement is the latest in a wave of support by key conservative leaders and influential individuals in Utah and around the country.

Highlighting the defeat of the three-term incumbent Bob Bennett, Santorum noted Mike Lee’s experience in clerking twice for Justice Sam Alito—once in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and then during Alito’s first year as a Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. “[Mike is] a solid conservative,” said Santorum. “He’s the kind of candidate that is exactly what we should be looking for.”

Comparing the two candidates vying for the Republican party’s nomination in the June 22 primary, Santorum stated: “I think Mike Lee is the stronger candidate and the better chance for us to win in the fall.”

In reaction to this newest endorsement, Lee commented: “During my campaign for the U.S. Senate, I’ve often been asked how I will be effective in implementing the various policies I’ve been advocating. My response has always been that I intend to be part of a growing coalition of constitutionally conservative Senators who will increase in number, influence, and leadership.” Lee continued: “Part of building this coalition is seeking support from other key Conservative leaders, of which former Senator Santorum is one. I am grateful for his support and hope to earn a vote of confidence from Utahns in order to have the opportunity to be a voice of reason and leadership in the U.S. Senate.”
