U.S. Senate Candidate Mike Lee Supports Earmark Moratorium and Balanced Budget Amendment

February 4th, 2010

Lee calls on Senator Bennett and all Senators to commit to earmark moratorium and balanced budget amendment

Salt Lake City, UT, February 4, 2010 — U.S. Senate candidate Mike Lee today announced his support for a one-year moratorium on earmarks and a balanced budget constitutional amendment. He also challenged Senator Bob Bennett and all Senators to work to enact the measures. U.S. Senators Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina), Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma) and John McCain (R-Arizona) put forward the proposals and called on their colleagues to stand up and do what is necessary to restrain wasteful spending and restore fiscal responsibility.

In declaring his support and issuing the challenge, Lee stated: "The American people are tired of out-of-control spending, bridges to nowhere, endless unfunded entitlements, the steady diet of pork barrel projects for the well-connected and the purchasing of political support with taxpayer dollars. Our citizens have also had enough of the smooth sounding, soothing and reassuring rhetoric of campaign-year promises to reduce spending." Lee continued, "It is time for true leaders to lead by taking real action – these measures will drive real and lasting change, reduce spending and ensure fiscal discipline now and in the future. I applaud these leaders for their wisdom and courage and challenge all Senators and candidates to join the fight to pass these measures and ensure that our financial house is in order for our children and grandchildren."

Mike Lee Testifies Regarding Health Care Nullification Bill

February 2nd, 2010

Utah Republican Candidate for U.S. Senate declares “individual mandate” un-constitutional

Salt Lake City, UT, February 2, 2010 — Testifying before the Utah House Health and Human Services Committee this morning, U.S. Senate Candidate Mike Lee discussed the importance of passing a bill introduced by Utah Representative Carl Wimmer (R-Herriman) that would require Utah to opt out of federal reform when the state determines that opting out is in the best interest of the citizens of the state.

The bill in question is HB67, one of around 30 bills being promoted by other states to accomplish the same objective, according to Wimmer.

During his testimony, Mike Lee stated, “The point is that the federal government, the Congress, has no power to pass an individual insurance coverage mandate. And it is not only the right of the State of Utah, I believe it's the duty, the obligation, of the State of Utah, to fight against encroachments on the state's proper sovereign power preserved by the Constitution whenever that's encroached upon.”

Mike Lee Opposes Nomination of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke

January 25th, 2010

Utah Republican Candidate for U.S. Senate demands transparency and accountability

Salt Lake City, UT, January 25, 2010 — Joining an increasing number of current U.S. Senators, Utah Republican Senate candidate Mike Lee today voiced his opposition to the nomination of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to a second term. Bernanke's current term expires on January 31st. President Obama's nomination of Bernanke is seen by many as a continuation of the status quo in Washington, without transparency or accountability, sparking significant opposition from Senators on both sides of the political aisle.

Mike Lee stated, "It is clear that during Chairman Bernanke's term, the Federal Reserve has played a significant role in creating and perpetuating policies and strategies that have contributed significantly to the most difficult economic environment our country has faced in a generation." Lee continued, "To confirm the Chairman to a second term would be both a tacit approval of his actions during these past few years, and an endorsement that 'business as usual' is acceptable. That is something I am simply not willing to do."

You are the Machine!

January 20th, 2010

We have seen an unprecedented victory last night in the State of Massachusetts as they elected Scott Brown to fill the seat formerly held by Ted Kennedy, which had not gone to a conservative for nearly six decades. In accepting the victory, Senatorelect Brown told his army of volunteers, “You had the political machine of Massachusetts running scared. And now you have proven that you, the people, are the machine!”

This victory is a shot heard 'round the country in many ways. It signals a return to “we the people”; it is a shout to stop politics as usual in Washington D.C.; it is a clarion call to both parties to stop the waste, stop the backroom dealing and start doing the people’s business. I am thrilled to have had so many in the State of Utah raise their hand and say they are willing to jump in and assist me in my quest to restore the Constitution to its proper place in our government and reclaim the future for the people of Utah.

I particularly appreciated Senator-elect Brown’s comment that the seat he would now occupy did not belong to a family or to a person or to a party, but to the people of the State. I share that view and want to return this Senate seat to the people of Utah.

Mike Lee Pledges to Repeal the Obama Health Care Plan

January 14th, 2010

Utah Republican Candidate vows to repeal any federal health care takeover and replace it with market-based reforms.

Salt Lake City, UT, January 14, 2010 — Rapidly responding to an open invitation to candidates and citizens from Repealit.org and Club for Growth President Chris Chocola, Utah Republican Senatorial candidate Mike Lee has pledged to repeal any federal health care takeover and replace it with market-based reforms, when elected.

In taking the pledge Mike Lee commented, "Any and all federal legislation with an individual mandate is not only repugnant to the principles of liberty this country was founded upon, but has no constitutional basis whatsoever." Lee continued, “Constitutionally, this issue belongs with the states. Clearly any health care reform must be market based, not run by federal government bureaucrats, and any regulation the people desire should be taken up with their state legislatures.”

Why I Focus on the Constitution

January 12th, 2010

A wise man once said, “That which we ignore or forget, our children may not know; what our children do not know, our grandchildren may not possess.” For this very reason, I have been speaking about the Constitution to various groups across the great State of Utah for the past several months. I am convinced that the principle of limited government, essential to upholding the Constitution, has been ignored and even forgotten by members of Congress from both political parties, thus threatening the future of our children and grandchildren.

The message I have been sharing—that the Constitution is the key to solving many of our current problems—has struck a responsive chord in freedom-loving Utahns throughout the State. The Constitution rings true for Utahns who understand intuitively that the unfettered expansion of the federal government is at the heart of our problems and is the by-product of our elected officials' failure to remember—and adhere to—the Constitution.
